Regenerative Medicine Roadmap: Guidelines for Science

Regenerative medicine is now one of the few rapidly developing fields that have a great potential in significantly improving the quality of life and promoting longevity. It is highly important to create a roadmap for the whole field in order to enable effective collaboration among the researchers and to multiply the future outcomes of their work.

The purpose of this chart is to create an overview of the field from the scientific point of view and to list the current and future research directions in each area. The goal is to create a draft of the scientific part of the Regenerative Medicine Roadmap, which would set the guidelines for the scientists, provide research plans for the institutions and help attract potential sponsors and investors.

Regenerative Medicine is divided into 5 blocks: Tissue engineering, Cell therapy, Diagnostic platforms, Healing therapies and Supporting Technologies. The main focus of the chart lies on the Tissue Engineering and Cell Therapy parts. These parts are schematically divided into components, which in their turn are described in more detail with specific research directions. Tissue engineering comprises such areas as methods, cells for use, biomaterials, database creation. The Cell Therapy part consists of three blocks, cell removal, regenerative capacity restoration and adding cells. Specific research directions listed provide the ground for forming research plans in each particular area. This preliminary work will help create a highly detailed plan of actions in regenerative medicine.

Regenerative Medicine Roadmap Chart is prepared by the international team of authors: Batin M. (Science for Life Extension Foundation); Chistyakov D. (PhD, D.Sci., State Research Institute of Genetics and Selection of Industrial Microorganisms, Moscow); Kokurina E. (Science for Life Extension Foundation); Konovalenko M. (Science for Life Extension Foundation); Shkrob M. (PhD, Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry RAS, Moscow); Sprygin A. (PhD, Federal Centre for Animal Health , Vladimir); Thomas M. (PhD, Institute of Clinical Pharmacology Robert Bosch Stiftung, Stuttgart); Tutukina M. (PhD, Dep. of Functional Genomics and Cellular Stress, Institute of Cell Biophysics RAS, Moscow); Ulasov A. (Department of Molecular Genetics of Intracellular Transport, Institute of Gene Biology RAS, Moscow); Macchiarini P. (MD, PhD, Professor, Department of Regenerative Surgery and Biotransplantation, University of Florence); Paltsev M. (Academician RAS and RAMS, I.M. Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy).

Maria Konovalenko was appointed as the Program Coordinator of Science for Life Extension Foundation in 2008. After graduating from Molecular Biophysics Department of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology her main scientific interest lies in the field of system biology of aging. She became the main coordinator of the work “Regenerative Medicine Roadmap: guidelines for science” which is presented at the Summit by the Foundation and prepared by the international team of authors.

The aim of the “Science for Life Extension” Foundation which was founded in 2008 in Moscow is to develop and apply scientific methods to help people substantially increase their healthy lifespan. The main project of the Foundation is the interdisciplinary program to study mechanisms of aging and develop methods to slow this process down. Now more than 100 scientists from different countries are working on this program. We seek to combine efforts to elaborate the united development methodology, the structure, priorities and the program implementation plan.
